Synopsis

Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia”. In addition to the title track, the musical includes such hits as “Super Trouper”, “Lay All Your Love on Me”, “Dancing Queen”, “Knowing Me, Knowing You”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Money, Money, Money”, “The Winner Takes It All”, “Voulez-Vous”, “SOS”, and more.

On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away. The problem? Sophie doesn’t know who he is! Her mother Donna, the former lead singer of the 1970s pop group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek in her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought!

This musical is Rated PG.

Director's Note

First of all I’d like to thank each and every one of you for coming to our production of Mamma Mia!, this has been a labor love several years in the making. Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie, a young woman on the verge of getting married to her fiancé Sky, on the path to discover who her father is. Her mother Donna, a once vibrant member of a disco girl group called The Dynamo’s, never married and has never told Sophie who her father is. With the help of her former band members, Tanya and Rosie, Donna does her best to keep the truth from Sophie as Sophie does her best to discover herself by filling in the biggest blank of her life, Who is her father? Through the use of popular music from ABBA, Mamma Mia! really walks us through this discovery of self and what family can mean for many different people.

There is a lyric you’ll hear that states, “Without a song or a dance who are we? So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me.” Music has the ability to change us. It can light up your day, help you move through emotion and be a representation of a moment. A single moment in time that you come back to every time you hear that same sound. The power that exists in a melody is healing. Ask yourself “Who am I? What brings me joy?” For me, music is the answer. Melody is the answer. In it I find self, family, community, past, present and future. This show is a love note to all that feel the same. To all the dreamers and believers that know a melody can change things. To all the educators and mentors that have put the music in us. To the family and friends that encourage and vary the melody. To the observers that appreciate it and continue to support it, thank you. Without you what are we? Enjoy.
