Synopsis

The Chinese Emperor acquires a nightingale and places it in a golden cage. Then he receives a mechanical nightingale, and it replaces the live one in his affection. When the Emperor falls deathly ill, the mechanical bird breaks down, but the real bird appears at his window and sings so sweetly that Death is vanquished.

Historian’s Corner

The eighth annual Theatre For Young People production was a dramatization of the Hans Christian Anderson story “The Emperor’s Nightingale.” This production marked the directing debut of Sara Flanders.
