Synopsis

This melodramatic comedy tells the story of a bishop, an elderly and saintly dignitary, who stops by accidentally with his equally mild older sister in an ugly old taproom just after there had been a holdup. The Bishop has always had a secret love of the wickedness on display in detective stories. The situations and confrontations that arise give the Bishop his perfect holiday.

Author: Frederick Jackson

Historian’s Corner

This melodramatic comedy was selected in keeping with the results of a poll of twenty favorite plays by the patrons from last season. “The Bishop Misbehaves” tied for second place among the twenty plays that were listed. After this play, the executive board determined that the remaining three shows for the season would each give only one performance at the Majestic Theatre.
