Synopsis

“Brief Candle” is a romantic comedy-drama with a New England seacoast setting. It deals in a sympathic way with the gradual changes which have come about in the old seaport town in the last fifty years. The leading character is Aunt Tiea. Aunt Tiea is 81 and has been bedridden for the last twenty years. Aunt Tiea wishes for her great nephew, Rodney not to miss the romance of which her life was deprived.

Author: Robert Hare Powel

Historian’s Corner

The Majestic Theatre was not available for the production of “Brief Candle” due to a commerical production, so the play was moved to Presser Hall at Illinois Wesleyan University. A special set that showed an outside New England Garden, with a seven foot wall, was needed for Act II. Howard Duesing and Albert Neubauer supervised the construction of this special scenery.
