Who May Audition?
Community Players invites all those who are interested to audition for a show. We encourage everyone regardless of theatrical experience.
When Are Auditions?
Auditions are at 7:00pm at Community Players Theatre (201 Robinhood Lane, Bloomington) unless otherwise noted on the show page. Auditions for a musical consist of three evenings (Often a Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday closing week of the prior show). Non-musicals audition only 2 evenings (Usually the Monday and Tuesday of the same time frame). You are not required to attend every audition date, but it can be helpful as the director will have more flexibility with pairings and you usually get more chances to read for roles. Please view the show description for specific audition dates as well as a list of primary characters and other important information.
How Are Auditions Conducted?
For a Musical, the audition is typically split into three sections:
The first section is a vocal audition. In this audition you will be asked to sing a few bars of a prepared piece. An accompanist is provided. Please provide your own music sheet music to be played.
The second section of the musical audition is a dance audition. No dance experience is required. The dance audition determines how well you are able to move and learn simple dance steps. Dance auditions may be more complex if the musical calls for complex dance numbers.
The third section of the audition is reading scenes from the script. The director is looking for your ability to interpret the script and interact with others. The director usually has in mind a certain physical type for a character and might take that into consideration (for example a family needs to look like a family).
For non-musicals, auditions typically consist of reading from the script.
Preparing To Audition
No special preparation is needed. Directors will usually have you read selections from the play. If you know the show and would like to read for a particular part you can indicate that on the audition form.
The most import aspect of the audition is to have fun!
When you come to auditions there is generally a calendar available listing all dates of rehearsals. Typically they begin at 6:30 or 7:00pm and end at 9:00 or 10:00pm, Monday through Friday. Conflicts for some rehearsals are allowed, but not for Tech Week or Performances. Please be prepared to write down all conflicts on your audition form as it can contribute to how we cast the show.
