We have an exciting year of events planned to celebrate our 90th season.
Kick Off Picnic
We started with the Community Players picnic on June 2 at Fairview Park where over 50 people came to share in a potluck, watch Rich Plotkin grill, and play a variety of games. (We have pictures here.)
A Rare Titanic Family
On June 30th, Julie Hedgepeth Williams, the author of A Rare Titanic Family, spoke to about 50 people, both from Community Players and the community, about her book, based on the life of her great uncle Albert and his family. They were missionaries, returning from Thailand, who booked passage on the Titanic, and were one of the few complete families to survive. They moved to Bloomington where they both worked for State Farm. Eventually Albert and Sylvia divorced. She acted in shows at Community Players and married J.G. Meherle, the founder of State Farm.
Bruce Parrish made a special trip back from Georgia to introduce Dr. Williams as he worked closely with her on her Community Players related research. The event was bracketed by two songs from some members of last year’s Titanic cast and crew, including Fania Bourn, Sarah Schramm-Bronson, Karen Clark, Cris Embree, Wendi Fleming, Jim Kalmbach, Barb Lemmon, Jean Lieder, John Lieder, Bob McLaughlin, Eli Mundy, Bruce Parrish, Eric Reichelt, Herb Reichelt, and Chrissie Strong.
Cornbelters Tailgate
Join us for a tailgate
at the Cornbelters game on Sunday, August 12th. This is the second year for the event, which was well attended last year. Game time is 5:00 p.m. We will be tailgating prior to the game, starting at 3:00 p.m. on the grounds outside the stadium. Ticket cost is $9.00 per person and must be paid in advance. Please RSVP ASAP to Wendi Fleming at cplayersmember@aol.com You may send a check made payable to Community Players Theatre for your tickets to Wendi Fleming, c/o the theatre. We definitely need a headcount so we know how many mouths we have to feed! Bring your family and come out for an amazing day of friendship and baseball.
Ribbon Cutting, Reception, and Overtones Production
On March 6 we will host a ribbon cutting by the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, followed by a reception, and at 5:30, a staged reading of Overtones (1915) by Alice Gerstenburg, a one-act play that was the first production of Community Players, directed by John Lieder.
Musical Revue
Broadway to Bloomington, a musical revue looking back over our history through music, will be performed April 4-7. Look for lots of music and guest stars! Auditions are being held Saturday and Sunday, February 23 and 24, 2013 at 7 p.m. The revue will be directed by Sally Parry, with musical direction by Chad Kirvan, and choreography by Sherise Kirvan. Tickets are available online or at the box office.
Gala
To cap off our celebration we will be having a gala at the Illinois State Alumni Center on June 1. It will be in the style of the 1920s and will feature entertainment, a DJ, and a silent auction. Sally Baugh is heading up the event with assistance from Aimee Kerber. More details on tickets are to follow. Tickets are available online or at the box office.
